Thus, the potential preoperative patient can be kept fasting.
TVS is also superior in obese patients, in patients with retroverted uterus and it also bypasses obstacles such as bone, gas filled bowel, and extensive pelvic adhesions. The limitations encountered with TVS were limited manoveuribility of probe and because of the unorthodox position and angle of the transducer, correct orientation was difficult initially. Ultrasound scan is a procedure that uses high frequency sounds to form a picture of the inside body on a monitor. There is no radiation involves as this is only a sound wave. Technique: A small transducer probe is used to generate sound waves on the surface of the body. These sound waves are reflected back by internal organs and they are again received by the same transducer.
Though most women are given an official due date, it is often just a the cervix happen internally, not externally,” Berghella told Live Science.
When you have a scan, it can be performed either internally or externally. Both kinds of scan work in the same way, using equipment that converts sound waves into pictures. In general, women have internal scans earlier in a pregnancy and external scans later on in a pregnancy. The reason for this is that in an internal scan the probe is closer to the uterus and can produce better quality images.
This means an internal scan can detect a developing baby much earlier than an external scan, so an internal scan is often performed to detect a pregnancy in the very early stages. Abdominal scans are performed once the baby is large enough for abdominal scans to produce clear images. For instance, the Nuchal Translucency Scan, performed at 12 to 14 weeks , is an external scan.
Typically, the only factor you need to worry about beforehand is whether your bladder is full or empty. For an external scan your bladder usually needs to be full. The Birth Company recommends drinking some water on arrival. For an internal scan it is best if your bladder is empty. In an external scan the scan probe is placed against your abdominal skin.
In an internal scan the probe is gently inserted into your vagina.

I have my first scan next week, OB is requiring me to go for the dating scan. I will be 8 weeks. Instructions was to have full bladder. Hoping it is a external as can’t imagine having an internal with hubby there. I am already very shy about those things. If you are right with your dates, an external should show you a HB. If you are a bit behind depending on the quality of the equipment they may not see much and recommend an internal. It’s up to you whether you have it or not as they won’t force you.
What are you going to do when you give birth, he will be seeing you in all your glory. I had an internal and I am shy. They are normally VERY discrete about that kind of thing They will give you a sheet and they dont look down there anymore than they have to. Dont worry too much.
